How to Care for Natural Fabric Clothing – Vinegar and other Bilquis Secrets

At Bilquis, We Believe that the Beauty of Natural Fabrics is a Luxury that Deserves Gentle Treatment. Silk, Cotton, Linen, and Wool Can Serve You for Years – Provided You Surround Them with Care.
one of the Best Allies in Fabric Care is… Vinegar. Yes, the Same one You Have in your Kitchen Can Work Wonders in your Premium Wardrobe.

Why is Vinegar your Clothes’ Best Friend?

While most laundry detergents and liquids damage natural fabric fibers, vinegar works gently, restoring their freshness and softness.

  • Neutralizes odors – even those that have penetrated deep into the fabric.

  • Softens fabric without using chemical silicone-based softeners.

  • Preserves color intensity – especially in silk and linen garments.

Just half a cup of white vinegar added to the final rinse is enough to make your clothes look like new.

When Vinegar is a Great Choice

  • Cotton and linen – regular rinsing with a small amount of vinegar helps maintain fiber softness and freshness.

  • Refreshing scent – vinegar neutralizes sweat or moisture odors, and even prevents yellow stains on light-colored clothes

  • Silk (hand rinse only) – a quick rinse with a bit of vinegar can remove detergent residue and restore shine, refreshing the fabric.

When to be Careful with Vinegar – when Shouldn’t You Use it?

  • Elastane and elastic clothing – frequent contact with vinegar can accelerate fiber breakdown. This especially applies to shapewear and leggings.

  • Silk and wool in daily care – adding vinegar to every wash is not recommended; use it occasionally and in small amounts.

  • Waterproof fabrics – vinegar can damage the hydrophobic coating.

  • Never with chlorine bleach – toxic fumes will form.

Natural Detergents and Washing Methods

Instead of classic detergents that can weaken fibers and cause color fading, choose:

  • Soap nuts – gentle on skin and fabrics.

  • Liquid castile soap – effective and safe, our favorite.

  • Homemade laundry detergent with soda and castile soap – perfect for allergy sufferers. There are plenty of recipes online for safe, eco-friendly washing of natural fabrics.

„Remember that less is more – natural fabrics don’t like excess detergents and harsh chemicals. Fabric softener smells nice, but damages clothes in the long run. It coats natural fibers with unnecessary chemicals and often causes skin irritation and itching. I haven’t used commercial liquids and powders for years – these are my personal experiences as an allergy sufferer.”
Małgorzata Majka – Bilquis

Natural Stain Removal Methods

  • Baking soda – gently removes greasy stains.

  • Lemon juice – lightens tea or coffee stains (only on light fabrics).

  • Vinegar and water (1:1) – handles wine or fruit stains without damaging fibers.

Always test the solution on an inconspicuous area of the fabric – natural fabrics are noble but require caution. If you’re unsure about handling a stain, better seek help. There are many eco-friendly dry cleaners who can do this for you. You can also write to us, we have extensive experience with natural fabrics.

Personally, I don’t use strong laundry detergents. I wash all my natural clothes practically naturally: castile soap, vinegar for color and softening, white bedding – soda and vinegar. This keeps clothes clean and free from chemicals that trigger my allergies. Sometimes I add lavender or tea tree oil – but I’m still testing these methods to develop the perfect, safe version without greasy stains – Małgorzata Majka – Bilquis.

Remember to be careful with vinegar on elastane – it’s synthetic and vinegar can cause its fibers to break down. I read about this once on MarthaStewart.com and there’s definitely something to it. However, our collections only have minimal elastane content so a small amount of vinegar in the rinse shouldn’t harm them.
